The KH Mangroves ecosystem project brings together the communities, fisher folk and the CMS mangrove experts to restore 50Ha and rehabilitate 250Ha. The process includes:

 

  • Survey, Monitor & Manage selected mangrove ecosystem areas inside harbour.

  • Plant mangrove seedlings 

  • Nurture existing mangrove plants

  • Remove pollution items clogging the mangrove roots.

  • Utilise Community members to deliver actions, monitor & record activity.

  • Strengthen connections between Communities and Environment via Mangrove Warden Program etc.

Reducing and preventing solid waste from reaching and damaging these mangrove ecosystems from the Kingston gully network. This will include:

  • Identify & Map Gully Pollution – Outflows as Land Based Sources (LBS) 

  • Use satellite and drones to predict and intercept the pollution.

  • Engage Communities & Entities that are directly contributing to the unmanaged waste disposal. 

  • Mobilise communities to clean up the gully related garbage. 

  • Institute a programme of prevention and cleaning.

  • Tie-in activities into existing plastic recycling schemes

Community member’s ownership of issues is essential to success; inform, educate, train, incentivise to participate and lead.

  • Engage fisherfolk to deliver project activity work in the Kingston Harbour.

  • Develop Mangrove Warden (with Roles & Responsibilities) 

  • Train Community members in audio-visual skills 

  • Design and implement Ecotourism-based mangroves activity. 

  • Motivate Community members to participate in plastic recycling schemes.
